The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has launched the iClimateAction project in partnership with the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), and the European Commission. Announced at WMO headquarters in Geneva and online, the initiative is designed to enhance global climate intelligence and bridge gaps in Earth observation.

WMO unveils iClimateAction to enhance climate intelligence

Supported by the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2023-2025, iClimateAction aims to address critical shortcomings in climate data collection and accessibility. By improving the standardization of Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) and ensuring better interoperability across observation networks, the project seeks to provide more actionable climate intelligence for scientists, policymakers, and communities worldwide.

As climate challenges intensify, iClimateAction is positioned to mitigate the fragmentation of climate monitoring efforts. The initiative aligns with key global programs, including Early Warnings for All and the Global Greenhouse Gas Watch, reinforcing international resilience against climate hazards. Additionally, it integrates with GEO-led projects such as the Global Heat Resilience Service and the Global Ecosystems Atlas, turning climate data into strategic, life-saving applications.

iClimateAction to standardize climate data for global impact

Coinciding with WMO’s 75th anniversary in 2025, the launch of iClimateAction underscores the organization’s ongoing commitment to scientific innovation and international collaboration for sustainability. The project reflects WMO’s mission to advance climate monitoring capabilities and support evidence-based decision-making at all levels.

With the participation of 193 member states and territories, the initiative is expected to enhance global climate response strategies. By leveraging comprehensive and standardized climate data, iClimateAction will facilitate informed decision-making, ensuring a more effective approach to climate action and resilience planning.

Bridging gaps in climate data with iClimateAction

The initiative marks a significant step in strengthening the global climate observation network. By fostering coordination between scientific institutions, governments, and international organizations, iClimateAction will contribute to more accurate climate predictions and improved adaptation strategies worldwide.

As the world faces escalating climate challenges, the launch of iClimateAction demonstrates a concerted effort to transform data into impactful solutions. Through enhanced cooperation and innovation, the project seeks to empower nations with the tools necessary to navigate an increasingly complex climate landscape. – By EuroWire News Desk.
